Canada’s
Felix Auger-Aliassime has divided opinion
throughout his short career. For many, he possesses the skills to become one of
the elite tennis players in men’s tennis, but others believe he does not have
what it takes to succeed against top players. Despite all that noise,
Auger-Aliassime continued to shine on the court this season with some
impressive results in the recent past.
Auger-Aliassime continued his good form during the
ongoing ATP event in Mallorca, cementing his spot in the quarterfinals of the
Mallorca Championships presented by Ecotrans Group after beating Arthur
Rinderknech of France in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
During the contest, Auger-Aliassime faced a challenging
scenario as he was harassed by a group of people sitting in the arena. The
individuals responsible for the unfortunate event were ejected from the arena.
The match was stopped due to the issue as well, and even Rinderknech intervened
to defend Auger-Aliassime and exchanged words with the people creating the
disturbance.
Talking after the match, Auger-Aliassime stated that he
was happy with the performance. “It was a good [opening] round,” he said.
“Playing on centre court here is a little bit different. [It was just]
adjusting, and he has a great serve so on grass it is never easy. Two contested
sets, but in the end, I came out victorious, so I’m really happy with the win.”
It will be Auger-Aliassime’s fourth consecutive
quarterfinal appearance this season. In the previous three, he won every
occasion. Auger-Aliassime will next face Hamad Medjedovic of Serbia in the next
round. The 21-year-old secured his spot in the last eight after beating Roman
Safiullin with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 7-6. It will be the first-ever meeting
between the two players in professional tennis.
